Located in West Central Georgia, Meriwether County lies on the Piedmont
Plateau, within the “Golden Triangle” formed by Atlanta, Columbus, and
Macon. With easy access to I-85,
our unique location puts Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport 35 miles
northeast, while
Georgia’s third largest city, Columbus, is 40 miles south, and Macon 60 miles
east. Our location and climate -
both natural and economic - are an increasing magnet to new and relocating
business and industry.
The average elevation of the county is 900 feet above sea level and peaks at
Pine Mountain rising to 1200 feet.
Our climate is mild and cooler than areas of the same latitude because of the
high altitude. Spring is usually
short with occasional periods of moderate storminess.
In summer the average temperature is 68 degrees.
About one-third of the days from December to February have a temperature
of 32 degrees or lower, though it rarely falls below 20 degrees.
There are approximately 200 frost-free days per year.
The
average annual rainfall of 49.4 inches is fairly well distributed throughout the
year.
