Hartsfield
International Airport:
Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport
is the world’s second busiest airport in passenger volume. Sixty-eight
million passengers passed through Hartsfield Atlanta during 1997.
Hartsfield is served by 30
passenger carriers, including 16 domestic carriers and 12 foreign flag
carriers. An additional 16 passenger airlines maintain off-line offices in
Atlanta, and 20 all-cargo airlines operate here.
Over 80 percent of the U.S.
market is within a two-hour flight time of Hartsfield.
Hartsfield offers more than
1,100 daily flights, including 58 international flights serving 36
international destinations to 28 countries worldwide. The airport is only ten
miles southwest of Atlanta’s central business district and offers easy access to
all of the major interstates, which connect Atlanta with the rest of Georgia and
the nation.
The Metro Atlanta Rapid Transit
Authority (MARTA) offers rail service to the airport, with an average travel
time of 15 minutes from downtown to the main terminal at Hartsfield.
In 1997, the ninth year in a
row, worldwide travelers rated Hartsfield the best airport in North America with
a focus on superior baggage handling, on time arrivals and departures, and
passport handling.
At Hartsfield, aircraft can
land in inclement weather conditions which otherwise require inconvenient and
expensive diversions to alternate airports. The Federal Aviation Administration
permits such operations at only two other U.S. airports, both on the West Coast.
Hartsfield is also a major air
cargo center, handling over 864,000 metric ton in 1997.
